It Was Never The Silence
It was the stillness that mattered the most, he believed, not the silence that so many people thought they needed.
No. It was never the silence.
Because, and he often thought of it this way once he allowed himself the luxury of actually thinking, it was the sounds that appeared with the stillness that truly contained the magic. The gentle crack of a glowing log as the surrounding fire slowly died. Or, perhaps, the almost imperceptible sound of the lapping waves as they softly brushed over the shingle that covered his buried feet.
These simple moments and even simpler sounds, they provided the soundtrack, the restful and relaxing background, to the stillness that gave his life the balance that he craved. And as much as he wanted to keep the sounds of the world in check, he knew that less, in so many different ways, was always going to mean more for him.
