Sometimes you find a place that grabs you, surprises you even. A place that makes you look around and think to yourself, well, I'm not really sure what I expected, but I certainly didn't expect this.
How can a place that looks and feels so peaceful have such a wretched past?
And it almost passed me by, what with filling my head with things that ultimately mean little and placing obstacles, finding obstacles, and allowing them to stop me.
The sun shone, we drove to the sea and were actually allowed to behave like normal people for a while. It wasn’t warm but seriously, this is England, who cares?
Because we are not the large bank balance, the expensive house or the new car. We are not even the exam results or the job title or the company that employs us.
Driving past a place that I have driven past before, I realised that I had never really seen it. Noticed, yes, but never properly seen. A place so quintessentially English with it’s old-fashioned village green, church and pond.
And suddenly, it was all over.
The final stage of our walk along the Sussex coast, the first significant walking challenge that we have ever set ourselves. And achieved.
Because whilst this stage may not have quite been the best, it was also not quite the last. But on both counts it was pretty close and that’s good enough for me right now.
A strange title for a walk along the coast, I can hear you thinking. And yes, you would be right.
The generosity and friendliness of strangers is something we are hoping to find more of on our adventures this year.
It becomes the focus of my positivity or general frustration, perhaps even more so when all around seems confused and unclear.
During turbulent times we all need an opportunity to reach out and find our moment of peace.
I heard those words earlier from someone known for their positive outlook on life.
Unexpectedly, if I am being honest, as the grey and overcast weather had seemed set for the season. But blue skies appeared and so did the people. It was that kind of day.
